Adaptive Reuse, Technical Discovery & Strategic Redevelopment
Building History • Compliance Pathway • Vision for Reuse
The work at 11 The Bridge began with uncovering the truth of an old, heavily altered building whose history stretched from butcher’s shop to nightclub and whose documentation had never kept pace with its changes. My role was to bring clarity, structure, and strategic direction to a property full of potential but clouded by uncertainty.
Much like the process-led discipline of Barbara Hepworth, the approach centred on revealing the real form: understanding the building’s construction, investigating past alterations, identifying compliance risks, and establishing the steps required to make it safe, workable, and eligible for future use. This included navigating planning history, reviewing structural logic, identifying fire and egress issues, clarifying VAT and Opt-to-Tax implications, and assessing what a viable redevelopment pathway would look like.
With this foundation, a clear strategy for adaptive reuse emerged, transforming the building into a contemporary live–work space or creative hub that could support local regeneration. The project now stands on solid footing, with a defined roadmap for planning, compliance, and future redevelopment, turning a neglected building into a meaningful opportunity for the town.
